The Legend, Your Average Korean Drama?
I woke up really late today, when I opened my eyes, I was like "WTF! IT'S ALREADY 3PM!" Damn...I missed my breakfast and lunch. I had to jump into my tea time straightway before I faint of hunger. I slept at 4am yesternight (or should I call it today morning?) as I was watching a korean series. Honestly, till now I'm not even sure of the real name of the show. It's either called "The Legend" or "The Story of the First King's Four Gods" and the starring was non-other than the famous Bae Yong Joon of Winter Sonata.
I have to confess 3 things before I go on:
1) I'm not a fan I'm not a korean drama fan myself
2) Bae Yong Joon is not my idol and will never ever be! (I heard most asian housewives idolize him)
3) I have only two reasons for watching this show, the first is that I heard they spent millions on the computer graphics with the assistance of Lord of the Rings' producer. The second reason is because of the cute chic ion the show.
Synopsis:
The story started in the early days of mankind. The God that created earth fell in love with a human girl (blessed with the power of the phoenix) and together they gave birth to the first true king of earth. However, the girl's sister felt jealous and decided to kill the baby by throwing it down the cliff. When the girl saw her son threw down the cliff, she lost control of herself, she went berserk unleashing the power of the phoenix. Even though the baby was rescued by the God, she still could not calm herself. After God summoned the other 3 holy beast (flying dragon, white tiger and giant tortoise) which failed in stopping the phoenix in causing mankind's destruction, he decided to kill his wife with his arrow.
After a few milleniums (more than 2000 years I think), God and his wife were reincarnated into human forms. God became the king of a country while his wife became an orphan that wields the power of the phoenix. Both fell in love with each other again. The story tells how the king manage his country and his role in determining the fate of humanity...
Personal Views:
I really thought that the show is going to be really different as in not you "regular korean drama" since most famous korean dramas are in modern time setting and this show is in ancient time setting. However, I was disappointed by the show because all the elements of a "regular korean drama" were present in this show. Let me share with you guys the 4 most popular elements of a "regular korean drama" :
1) The actresses must know how to activate teary eye mode (meaning she can make her eyes filled with tears anytime she wants because she will be doing that for at least for half of story)
2) The talking scenes between the lovers are unusually long (there's always the "I look at you, you look at me" moments that stayed for several minutes, probably to buy time for the audience to get the tissues from the toilet)
3) The true lovers of the story can never be together in the end even though they long for each other (it's so called the "so close yet so far" effect, sometimes they prefer to let one of the lovers die to heighten the drama though)
4) It's always the "WTF!" ending (the ending is always difficult to put into words or unexplainable which makes the audience wondering what really happened in the end)
I felt that the story was actually very simple as well as common. For instance in many stories, they tell of how mankind wanted to break loose from the chains of God. Struggling and wanting to live a life fully governed by themselves and not fate. In the end, they discovered that the choice was always in their hands...
All and all, the show was really breath-taking in the beginning with all the gay heavenly beasts flying all over the place. It's a must watch if you are a korean drama fan or a Bae Yong Joon fan, don't miss it! =P

talking about emotions.. hmm hurley u watching soppy korean movies now..
+size - hurley getting emo - shudderssssssss
hurley - dragon (left), phoenix (front), tiger (right) and tortoise (back) are the features in chinese fengshui, kinda of like north south east west guards. guess if you study chinese folklore, there bound to be some mention of it too...
same for me, unless it comes with subtitles, i would be lost. that said, i have not really finished watching any korean series, the closest i ever get is the Dae Jang Geum (or something spelt like that) - i was so frustrated watching it that i stopped after a few episodes.
it does come with English subtitles and dubs in several languages. Come on! It's like doraemon, he can speak english, japanese, chinese, malay, french, spanish, german and whatever. Famous shows are usually like that.
Thomas: that's right, it is related to the chinese fengshui thing, even japanese do believe in that. The four beasts are like guardians of the four directions. U felt frustrated because you don't have enough tissue papers is it? =P
not for the lack of tissue paper lah, it is for the sheer stupidity and unplaced loyalty, i mean, if someone is so obviously evil, you still can offer your left cheek after they slap your right cheek? no siree, i don't like to watch shows where one don't stand up for oneself, let people bully you left and right. we have enough of that in real life, we need escapism, that's why we watched the idiot box in the first place.
we dun comment comment anymore.. later he duwan fren us..
